Upper Mustang Trek is one of the most popular and growing treks in the present scenario. As the kingdom was forbidden in the past and got opened to the foreigners recently, the numbers of tourists visiting the region has increased in recent days. This remote trans-Himalayan region offers you a spectacular trekking journey through the semi Tibetan region of Nepal, which is closely related to the language, geography, and culture of Tibet. Also, this region is the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range.
The trek to the Upper Mustang can be exciting, thrilling, and a completely new experience as it takes you to the forbidden kingdom of Nepal. Although Mustang was once an independent kingdom in the past, it was annexed by Nepal. After the annexation, it was not allowed for the tourists. The area was forbidden until the year 1992 and was not opened for foreign visitors. Hence, it is one of the most preserved regions of the world. The majority of the people here are Tibetan, and people speak in the Tibetan language here. Even today, people visiting here need to take a special permit in order to enter the region, which costs $50 per day for a person. These days more than a thousand tourists visit this region.
This region offers a unique and humbling experience for the trekkers as it gives you the closest view of the deserted area of Nepal. The route to this kingdom is highly restricted and often requires a special permit by the government of Nepal. Although the region is easy to trek to and has the highest location at an altitude of 3,820 meters, the trek is full of remote adventures.
The formation of the dry and the incredible rocks makes the Upper Mustang Valley dusty and deserted. You will need to walk through the rock formations along with the deserted mountain trails, which are dusty. Also, the passes here are small. However, you will only get to see green Tibetan villages in some area as you pass between the trails.
You will require at least ten days to trek to the Upper Mustang. On average, the trekking days can go upto 12 to 14 days.
Route for Mustang Trek
To reach to the Mustang, you can take a 25 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From Pokhara, you can travel to the Annapurna Circuit. Jomsom is the starting point of the route to Upper Mustang.
The difficulty level for the Upper Mustang Trek is moderate. It means that the trek is not so difficult to overcome and not so easy too. You do not need any kind of experience while you trek to upper Mustang. Also, there is no need for you to be a professional trekker while you trek to the region. However, you should make sure that you can walk for around 5-7 hours during the trek days. Also, you do not need to prepare yourself physically as you do not need any physical labor during the trip. If this is your first trek, you will undoubtedly enjoy it. Some days can be really hectic and troublesome as you will need to trek at a higher altitude. Anyone with any level of fitness can easily complete the trek. So, you do not need to worry about trekking.
The weather is Mustang is harsh throughout the year. It is always windy and dusty. Hence, the weather in the winter season can turn extremely bad. The harsh weather in the winter season makes it hard for you to even drive easily. The wind blowing in the region is very strong. So, it is better if you do not plan the Upper Mustang Trek during the winter season. You can choose the summer, spring, or autumn season as the best time for trekking in the region.
